Meet Rylie Lapikas, a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in Human Development & Family Studies. At Kent State’s Recreation and Wellness Services, she has found it to be more than a workplace, but a space for leadership, connection, and personal growth.

Rylie began working in RecWell in 2022, and since then, she has adopted many roles in the department. Serving as a FitWell Receptionist, Yoga Instructor and Safety Course Instructor in Aquatics. Balancing three positions alongside the demands of nursing school has required crucial time management skills which she has fostered. 

“When I get busy, I prioritize academics,’ Rylie shared. “But RecWell has always supported me in making my schedule around work and nursing.” She has thus felt encouraged to take care of herself and focus on the goals she came to Kent State University for.

Rylie’s experience in the RecWell culture allowed her to connet with students from across campus, many who she’s also met in her courses. “I’ve met so many people from different majors and different years,” she said. “My favorite part about working at the Rec has been building friendships and getting to know people I may have never got to meet.”

Rylie has taken on different leadership roles and developed skills that directly translate to her future career in healthcare. As a Yoga and Safety Course instructor, she has learned how to lead with both confidence and compassion. She shares that she’s grown in teamwork and learning to use empathy to be a caring and inclusive leader. RecWell has helped Rylie become more comfortable guiding others.

One moment that stood out to Rylie was during a yoga class when a participant arrived feeling uneasy about trying something new. At the end of the class, the same person told Rylie that she helped make them feel comfortable and that they’d keep coming back. “That really showed me how important it is to create a welcoming environment.” She explained, connecting to RecWell’s values and how she used them to teach.

Outside of RecWell, Rylie continues to lead and serve on campus. She is the President of Freedom Paws, where she has helped raise two service dogs in training that she owns. Furthermore, she is an active member of the Student Nursing Association. Rylie has also explored hands on clinical experience in the nursing field as a current certified EMT working in a Level 2 trauma center.

As Rylie reflects her time with RecWell, she emphasizes the importance of embracing your experience here. “Get involved with as much as you can and don’t be afraid to make friends and go to events.” She recommends this to new hires; she never knew how those connections would shape her journey now. 

Amidst every role Rylie holds, she continues to embody RecWell’s mission as she encourages others to prioritize their health, strive for personal growth, and feel welcomed to the community.
