However, the Kent State Golden Flashes' acceptance of a bowl bid out of state quickly derailed that plan. While they couldn't be in two places at once, especially considering Boise, Idaho, is more than 2,000 miles from Kent, these graduates still got their moment to shine.

At 5'9", Isaac Vance doesn't immediately stand out next to his Kent State football teammates, but his big heart and care for others clearly make him one of the tallest on the team. Vance, a senior wide receiver, was surprised Dec. 17 as the Humanitarian Award winner ahead of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. The award is given annually to a player from each team for exemplary community service and leadership efforts. With an infectious smile and overwhelming positivity, it's easy to see why Vance stands out as a person who cares deeply about helping others.

Golden Flashes Unite to Fight Hunger in Boise

The first showdown of Kent State's offensive and defensive units ahead of Tuesday's bowl game came not in pads and helmets but in hairnets and aprons. The two sides did battle in a competition to feed the needy by working together to package as many meals as they could in a one-hour period. Players and coaches spread out in the gymnasium of Bishop Kelly High School and worked as fast as they could to package rice and other ingredients to make jambalaya.

Four-plus hours by air, traveling 2,046 miles due west, and Kent State has arrived for its second bowl game in three seasons. The Mid-American Conference Eastern Division champion Golden Flashes (7-6) will take on Wyoming (6-6) in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 3:30 p.m. (EST). The game will air on ESPN and the Kent State Radio Network.

Kent State Approves 26 Named Spaces in New Crawford Hall in Recognition of $10.7 Million in Philanthropic Gifts

During its regular quarterly meeting held Wednesday, Dec. 15, the Kent State University Board of Trustees approved naming resolutions for 17 spaces to be located in the future Crawford Hall based on philanthropic gifts of $100,000 or more. An additional nine named spaces were approved by Kent State President Todd Diacon that were below the required Board approval threshold.

The new majors – the Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology major within the Bachelor of Science degree and the Emerging Media and Technology major within the Master of Science degree – will help meet the high demand for these types of programs and provide opportunities for students to find careers in these growing fields.

COVID-19 Plans for Spring Semester

Our guidelines follow the best science-based advice available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), our state and local health departments and the experts from our College of Public Health. Our strategy for maintaining a healthy campus community amid COVID-19 will be very similar to this semester.

In observance of Veterans Day, Kent State University will be closed Nov. 11 and will reopen Nov. 12.

The University Library will be open until 10 p.m. with .
The Student Recreation and Wellness Center will have adjusted hours – 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Kent State University’s annual Veterans Day observance will include a flag-raising ceremony conducted by a joint color guard from the university’s Army and Air Force ROTC programs.

New Partnership Between Kent State and Bio-Med Science Academy STEM School to Bring Elementary Education Back to University’s Schwartz Center

Beginning fall 2027, Bio-Med Science Academy will relocate its grades K-6 programs to Kent State University’s Schwartz Center. The Schwartz Center, which opened in 1956 as the home of the Kent State University School, a laboratory school that served generations of student teachers, will return to its original purpose as a school building.

Kent State Board of Trustees Announces Partnership With Bio-Med Science Academy

Kent State University’s Board of Trustees approved a new partnership between the university and Bio-Med Science Academy STEM School that will bring new life to the underutilized Michael Schwartz Center building while providing the public STEM school with a state-of-the-art facility for its elementary grades. The Board’s vote of approval came during its regular quarterly meeting held Dec. 11.

Kent State Reaffirms Its Leadership as Top Northern Ohio Public University in 2026 U.S. News Best Colleges Rankings

In the newly released rankings, Kent State is once again the highest-ranked public institution in northern Ohio, and with its impressive national ranking of No. 129, the university continues to be recognized among the Top Public Schools in the nation.

Kent State University will hold its annual Veterans Day observance on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. on the Student Green at Risman Plaza.

The outdoor program, Honoring All Who Serve, will include a flag-raising ceremony conducted by a joint color guard from the university’s Army and Air Force ROTC programs, remarks from Kent State President Beverly Warren and guest speakers. Retired Petty Officer 1st Class Mark Gainer, who currently serves as president of the Kent State Veterans Club, will be the guest speaker.

All are invited to come and pay tribute to America’s veterans. A special invitation is extended to Kent State faculty, staff, students and community members who are veterans, active service members or who have family members in the military.

A reception in the Kent Student Center Kiva lobby will follow the brief program. In the event of inclement weather, the rain location will be the Kent Student Center Kiva.
