Vivian Feke, a recent graduate of Kent State University who studied broadcast journalism in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, is the winner of the 2016 Student Edward R. Murrow Overall Excellence Award for video. 

Scholar of the Month Lawrence Osher Professor College of Podiatric Medicine 1982-present An accomplished doctor and academic, a highly regarded colleague and educator, the June 2016 Scholar of the Month is Dr. Lawrence Osher of Kent State University’s College of Podiatric Medicine, a decision made unanimously among the college’s leadership.

Kent State University’s tradition of athletic success was on full display in early June, earning a national player of the year, a national assistant coach of the year and an honor for excellence throughout its 10 women’s sports.

Kent State University celebrated the grand opening of its new Center for Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement, located at 350 S. Lincoln St. in Kent, Ohio, on June 3. The event, was free and open to the public.

Kent State Athletes Shatter Record for Highest GPA in Program History The 2016 Kent State University Golden Flashes have shattered the record for the highest annual grade point average (GPA) in program history. They also broke the record for the most students with a perfect 4.0. 

Kent State University freshman Josh Paulin is not only a good student, but an exemplary citizen. On March 13, 2016, Paulin saved a man’s life, and now Kent State’s Department of Public Safety is honoring Paulin for his heroic acts.    

Kent State University held its Spring 2016 Commencement ceremonies for the Kent Campus on Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14, at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation (MAC) Center. The final ceremony will be held Friday, May 20, at Cartwright Hall. Kent State will confer 4,210 degrees, including 3,067 bachelor’s degrees, 968 master’s degrees, 169 doctoral degrees and six educational specialist degrees.

The Stress-Free Zone returns to the Kent State University Library on Monday, May 9, and Tuesday, May 10, from 3 - 5 p.m. to give students a break from studying for finals. The much-loved Dogs on Campus Pet Therapy Program® will be back once again, and snacks and beverages will be provided. Karen Hillman, director of marketing, communications and public relations for University Libraries, said the Stress-Free Zone is one of the most popular events for students.

The Center for the Visual Arts, the new home of Kent State University’s School of Art, celebrated its grand opening on May 6. The festivities began with a short program, immediately followed by building tours, live entertainment, student exhibitions and refreshments. Concluding the grand opening events, a lecture by distinguished visiting artist Mel Chin was held at 6:30 p.m. in Room 165. The opening program and events, as well as the keynote lecture, were free and open to the public.

Scholar of the Month Terri Kent Professor College of the Arts 1991-present An accomplished director, actor and educator, Terri Kent is a professor in the School of Theatre and Dance at the College of the Arts. She is the coordinator of the musical theatre program and is the producing artistic director of Porthouse Theatre, Kent State University’s summer professional theatre.
